Hypothyroidism is a condition when the thyroid gland produces less thyroid hormone than it should which causes the metabolism to run too slow. This condition may be present from birth (congenital hypothyroidism) or may appear later during childhood, adolescence or in adulthood. It is mostly seen in women between the ages of 40 – 50 and is seen in women ten times more often than men.
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism
Common symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, weight gain, constipation, high blood pressure, fluid retention, depression, body pain, slow reflexes, and much more.
Treatment for Hypothyroidism
Treatment of hypothyroidism depends upon the underlying cause of the problem, but most cases are managed with replacement therapy. Treatments include:
Observation: Mild abnormalities don’t need treatment but tests should be repeated to monitor the condition.
Cessation of drugs that may be causing the problem: eg lithium, amiodarone.
Thyroxine replacement therapy: Usually is the mainstay of treatment.
Thyroid Surgery – large goiters may have to be removed surgically and may accompany hypothyroidism, The patient will then require treatment with thyroxine.
