Symptoms and Treatment Options
The thyroid gland consists of two lobes located on either side of the windpipe whose purpose is to release hormones. Thyroid cancer occurs when the genetic material of cells in the gland become damaged or changed, producing mutations that affect normal cell growth and division. These abnormal cells then replicate, causing cancer.
Symptoms of thyroid cancer
Although many patients with cancer of the thyroid are asymptomatic at first. The possible signs of thyroid cancer include a lump in the neck (which may be rapidly growing), voice changes, difficulty in breathing or swallowing or lymph node swelling.
Thyroid Cancer Treatment
Thyroid cancer is initially treated by surgically removing the whole thyroid gland (a procedure known as a Total thyroidectomy). If the cancer has spread beyond the thyroid, other affected tissue such as the lymph glands in the neck will also be removed. Radiation is given following surgery for thyroid cancer. High-energy radiation is used to ablate the remnant thyroid tissue (after thyroidectomy).
