The thyroid gland consists of two lobes located on either side of the windpipe whose purpose is to release hormones. Thyroid cancer occurs when the genetic material of cells in the gland become damaged or changed, producing mutations that affect normal cell growth and division. These abnormal cells then replicate, causing cancer. 

Symptoms of thyroid cancer

Thyroid cancer is initially treated by surgically removing the whole thyroid gland (a procedure known as a Total thyroidectomy). If the cancer has spread beyond the thyroid, other affected tissue such as the lymph glands in the neck will also be removed. Radiation is given following surgery for thyroid cancer.
